Do you use some kind of light tripod that you carry everywhere? This is how you take those awesome Instagram photos, right?

Yes, I do carry a small Gorilla Pod with me wherever I travel and I use it quite often to take pictures or videos. Sometimes I just put my camera anywhere I see fit - like a rock, a cliff, a tree branch, or anything of the kind, set it on a 10-second self-timer, and run to the location to get a picture. Though obviously it's easiest if there are any people around and you can ask them to take a picture of you.

One thing to keep in mind is that generally you need to be very specific about how you want them to take the picture and how to hold the camera, as most people have a very different understanding of what a good picture is. So show them how you want them to hold the camera and then ask them to take 3-5 pictures of you in different poses. Then, after a little bit of editing on your computer, you have a good chance of having taken a really nice photo.
